Best Neighbourhoods: Hillhurst


Recently, Avenue Magazine released their annual list of Calgary’s Best Neighbourhoods, a ranking of the top 50 communities as voted on by Calgarians. We decided to take a closer look at the communities in the top 10, and give you some insight on what to see and do there.

In the number five spot is the northwest community of Hillhurst, bounded by 8th Avenue, 16th Avenue, 10 Street and the Bow River.

According to Avenue Magazine, the top ranking qualities of Hillhurst include:

  • Restaurants/cafes/bars: there’s a lot of noteworthy places to enjoy food and drinks in Hillhurst. Classic community favourites include Higher Ground Cafe, Molly Malone’s Irish Pub and Brasserie. Some new places to try are Hayden Block and The Daily.
  • Entertainment/arts: there’s lots of places to enjoy local entertainment in Hillhurst, and be sure to visit the iconic Plaza Theatre.
  • Value of homes: property values in Hillhurst went up 5.2% in the last year alone.

  • Access to buses/LRT
  • Walk score: Hillhurst has an 85 walk score, due to the pedestrian-friendly design of the community and all the parks and pathways nearby.
  • Close to downtown
