Best Neighbourhoods: Signal Hill

Recently, Avenue Magazine released their annual list of Calgary’s Best Neighbourhoods, a ranking of the top 50 communities as voted on by Calgarians. We decided to take a closer look at the communities in the top 10, and give you some insight on what to see and do there.

In the number six spot is the southwest community of Signal Hill, which is bounded by Sarcee Trail, 17 Avenue, Glenmore Trail and Springbank Hill.

  • Population: 13,616
  • Density/People per sq. km: 2,431
  • Homeowners: 92%
  • Median tax assessment of residential property, 2016: $575,000

According to Avenue Magazine, the top ranking qualities of Signal Hill are:

  • Parks/pathways: Battalion Park is somewhat of an attraction in this area. The hill (pictured above) features 16,000 stones hauled by soldiers and arranged to form four numbers (137, 113, 151 and 51). The numbers correspond to the four battalions of the Canadian Expeditionary Force who trained in that area before leaving to fight in World War 1.
  • Boutiques: Signal Hill Shopping Centre has over 60 shops, boutiques and outlet stores.
  • Library: the Signal Hill Library is a community favourite!
  • Playgrounds: there’s a number of playgrounds in the area for residents to take the whole family.

Approximately an hour’s drive from the mountains and just minutes from downtown, thanks to the new West LRT leg, Signal Hill residents are just a stone’s throw away from it all. [Avenue Magazine]
