Calgary’s Best: Signal Hill

The verdict is in, Avenue Magazine released the rankings of Calgary’s Best Neighbourhoods, and over the coming weeks, we are going to delve into the investment opportunity and benefits of each of the top 10 communities.

In the number five spot, is the northwest community of Signal Hill:

  • 13,616 population
  • 57 walk score
  • 42 transit score
  • 63.45 crime rate
  • 0 off-leash parks

Signal Hill is a community with beautiful, diverse homes for sale in Calgary SW. Bordered by Sarcee Trail, 17th Avenue and Glenmore Trail, this community provides ample access to main roads and transportation. There is a large park on the south side of Signal Hill, and plenty of amenities within with shopping centres serving this community. As for investment opportunity, the median assessed property value is $555,000, which is down 3.6 per cent from the previous year. However, this is in no way a reflection of the area but a reflection on the economy.

Some of the notable perks as ranked in the survey (overall ranking compared to all communities in Calgary):

  • Access to restaurants, coffee shops and bars: 12th overall
  • Value of homes: 42 out of 185
  • Access to parks and pathways: 30 out of 185

The west-end neighbourhood of Signal Hill is easily identified by the striking geoglyphs on the hillside at Battalion Park. The large-scale installation of whitewashed stones placed to create groupings of numbers serves as a memorial to the Albertan soldiers who fought in the First World War in battalions 137, 113, 151 and 51. This unique fusion of heritage and public art sets Signal Hill apart — as does the exceptional shopping at the base of the hill. [Avenue Magazine]
