How to prepare for moving day

The big day is only weeks away. You have butterflies in your stomach, both excitement and nerves. The new place is great, but how did I accumulate so much stuff?!

Sound familiar? It’s easy to forget how many things you really have until you need to pack up everything and move. There’s something about packing up box after box after box that makes you stop and think, “How could I have done this better?” Here is a 6-week checklist to ensure that your moving day is as stress-free as possible.

6 Weeks Prior to Moving Day Checklist:

  • Sort & purge your closet. Male or female, we accumulate more clothes than we throw out. This is just a simple fact of life. Usually, we get tired of the trend before the clothes wear out. Sort your piles into: 1. Need 2. Want 3. Donate 4. Garbage. Then sort through the ‘Want’ pile again.
  • Don’t use it? Lose it! This applies to clothes, shoes, toiletries, kitchen accessories, anything that is hidden in the back corner of the garage. Donate it or toss it, you don’t need it taking up more space in your new home.
  • Measure to make sure. When you see your new home, make sure to take measurements of the rooms, spaces, nooks and crannies. Once you start planning where you want your furniture to go, it would be nice to know if it will fit ahead of time.

4 Weeks Prior to Moving Day Checklist:

  • Find Movers. Whether this is friends, family or a professional company, get this set up right away. You’ll feel much better about the day once you know who is going to be handling your $3000 TV.
  • Change your address. A tedious process but so important. Call all your important bills to change your address. You can also set up mail forwarding with Canada Post for a fee.
  • Get moving supplies. This includes boxes, tape, Sharpies to label the boxes, newspaper to wrap up breakables, etc. Then you can get started packing right away.
  • Arrange for cable and utilities to be shut off. Ease your stress on moving day and call these ahead of time.
  • Book the day off work. Moving day can often be 4-8 hours of hard work that is both physically and mentally tiring, so we recommend taking the whole day off to get settled.

1 Week Prior to Moving Day Checklist:

  • Double check everything. Confirm timing with the movers, sort through any lingering items, make one last donation run, defrost the freeze and wipe out the fridge.
  • Pack a suitcase. Include any next day essentials since let’s face it, you’re going to be unpacking for weeks.
  • Deep clean. You will have to clean on moving day but if you clean well prior too, it isn’t nearly so bad.

Your Moving Day Checklist:

  • Strip your bed. Garbage bags are an easy way to pack up these bulky items.
  • Make an assembly line. Get things up and out the door from largest to smallest, to make sure there is enough room for that 8-piece sectional before lamps and side tables.
  • Empty fridge/freezer food into a cooler. Do this next to last so things stay cold for as long as possible.
  • Sweep and wipe counters. Thanks to your deep clean last week, the cleaning will be minimal.
  • Do final walkthrough & look for missed things. Check for phone chargers, pictures on the walls, magnets on the fridge and anything hidden away in closets or cupboards.
  • Leave your keys on the table. You’re out!

Congratulations on leaving your old home and moving into your new home like a pro!
