Calgary’s Best: Signal Hill

With over a million people city-wide, Calgary always has something fun going on. Whether you like pubs, clubs, outdoor events or food trucks, you would be surprised at the number of events happening around the city every day. The 180+ unique neighbourhoods have a little something for everyone, whether you want to live downtown or in the suburbs, like sky-high condos or character homes, or you want to be close to the river or Village Ice Cream. Avenue Magazine’s annual Best Neighbourhoods Survey was released recently and ranked each community based on a number of factors as reported by the city’s inhabitants.

This year, Signal Hill ranked number four city-wide! This community is found in the southwest quadrant of the city between Sarcee Trail, 17thAvenue and Glenmore Trail. Here are some of the basic statistics about this neighbourhood:

  • Population in 2017: 13,533
  • Walk score: 57
  • Transit score: 42
  • Recreation facility: 62

Compared to the top ten ranking communities in Calgary, Signal Hill sits right in the middle for the above categories. Since the neighbourhood covers such a large area, only portions of it are very walkable and provide easy transit options. The rest of the community consists of beautiful residential neighbourhoods, home to quiet streets, newly developed houses and buildings for rent/sale.

Residents of Signal Hill are particularly fond of Battalion Park, an old military reserve that was used from before the first World War until the 1990s by the Canadian Armed Forces. There are four large geoglyphs on the hillside, displaying the numbers 137, 113, 151 and 51. These are battalion numbers spelled out in 16,000 whitewashed rocks. The Park is now used for recreation as it is a great place to walk, run the stairs and enjoy the fresh air in Signal Hill.

Other notable statistics about Signal Hill area:

  • Fairly low crime, both person and crime-related
  • A large community covering 5.6 square kilometres
  • Access to a large shopping centre with 60+ stores
