Calgary’s Best: Downtown

When you hear the word ‘downtown,’ you know there will always be something happening there. In Calgary, it’s home to numerous notable institutions that are known city-wide, provincially, nationally and perhaps even internationally. Places like the Glenbow Museum, Fort Calgary, Studio Bell, Olympic Plaza and the Calgary Tower bring in tourists from around the globe to see what life in Calgary is all about. Perhaps less notable but are still large attractions in the area are places like the CORE shopping centre, Eau Claire market, the downtown west end and access to Prince’s Island Park on the Bow River Pathway. These are just a few of the countless reasons that keep people bustling in and out of the neighbourhood every month of the year.

This year, Avenue Magazine named Calgary’s Downtown Commercial Core the tenth best neighbourhood in the city in its annual survey. This survey ranks neighbourhoods based on a variety of factors due to their walkability, access to green spaces, transit options, restaurants and pubs nearby, etc. When assessing the downtown area, the following statistics were determined:

  • Population in 2017: 8,477
  • Walk score: 93
  • Transit score: 84
  • Recreation facility: 54

The downtown area is one of the most densely populated top ten ranking neighbourhoods in Calgary. Being named the tenth best neighbourhood city-wide, the Downtown Commercial Core actually ranks the best in both walkability and access to public transportation. This allows people to commute to work, extracurriculars and any after-work entertainment without adding a vehicle to the everyday downtown hustle and bustle. Whether it is summertime and citizens are walking the river pathways or they are hitching a ride on the C-train in the winter, the Downtown Commercial Core neighbourhood values modes of transportation other than personal vehicles.

Notable statistics from the 2018 Avenue Magazine survey:

  • #1 in Best Access to Restaurants, Cafes and Bars
  • #1 in Best Neighbourhoods for Transit
  • #2 in Most Walkable Neighbourhood

Compared to the top ten neighbourhoods in Calgary, Downtown Calgary passes the finish line miles ahead of every other community in the number of restaurants available to its residents. Coming in at 352 restaurant points, the Beltline received 288 followed by the next closest contender in the top ten ranking neighbourhoods, Arbour Lake, at 56. Whether you want brunch at 10am, get pizza at 3pm, grab donairs at midnight or chow down on Chinese food late in the night, there is a place for you in downtown.

The Downtown Commercial Core is known for office buildings and restaurants, but people do not often think about living in this trendy hub.
