Real estate superstitions that could spook buyers

With Halloween only days away, the annual traditions and superstitions flood the city. Businesses are decorated in orange and black, you’ll find yourself running into cobwebs and black cats more often than usual and find broomsticks around just about every corner. These traditions keep the spooky atmosphere alive each year and help get people to get into the holiday spirit. However, not all superstitions are as encouraging as these. When it comes to the real estate market, there are more superstitions when it comes to selling a house than the general public is aware of. Whether you’re looking to buy a home, sell a home or simply welcome someone to the neighbourhood, check out some of these real-estate superstitions that might just jinx you:

  • We North Americans fear the number 13, however, the Chinese fear the number 4. We pronounce this number similarly to the way the Chinese pronounce the word ‘death,’ so it is avoided at all costs. Therefore, if your sale price, house number, phone number – your anything – has a 4 in it, you can kiss that sale goodbye!
  • If you want to keep your home ghost-free, paint the front of it blue. Apparently, a ghost can’t tell the difference between blue paint or the blue ocean – you sure fooled him!
  • If you’ve decided you’re going to build a home, make sure to buy an empty lot. If you buy one with an existing home on it, someone in your family will die an early death!
  • When moving out a house, throw out your old brooms. Bringing old brooms in a new house can cause all sorts of bad luck that you definitely don’t want!
  • If you receive a set of knives as a housewarming gift – beware!! These symbolize that your friendship with the gift giver will be ending soon and you will be cut off from them.
  • However, if you have friends you would like to welcome to the neighbourhood, we’ve heard that salt, rice and bread show that they will have a full, prosperous and luxurious life in that home.
  • If you’re looking to accumulate wealth – and let’s be honest, who isn’t? – scatter coins on the floor around your new home. This will encourage more money to enter the home.

Well, what do you think Calgary – do these real estate superstitions make sense to you? We know the home buying, selling, packing and moving process can be long and stressful, so sometimes it’s easier to depend on a little divine intervention to help you get things going. Plus, it doesn’t hurt to take your mind off of it for a little now, does it? Whether you try something new or simply get a few laughs out of it, we hope you enjoyed these fun facts and have a great Halloween Calgary! Maybe consider skipping the #4 houses on your family’s trick-or-treating route this year – it could strike up some interesting conversation!
