Nominate a Local Business for the Small Business Calgary Awards

Small Business Week in Calgary isn’t until the third week of October, but now is the time to get your nominations in for the awards that take place here. Small Business Week is the largest celebration of small businesses across Canada. They host a wide variety of events, workshops and speakers all around the city. Plus, don’t miss out on the biggest event of the week: the Calgary Small Business Expo; if you want to network, pick up new clients or simply educate yourself, this is the place to be.

Albertans generally tend to think of large oil and gas corporations when they think of business. However, what they don’t realize is that 95% of all businesses in Alberta are small! These manage to account for 30% of our total GDP, spanning from small, local restaurants to up-and-coming technology firms. In Alberta, we have 39 small businesses per 1000 people; this is significantly higher than the national average.

For these reasons and many more, we have the Small Business Calgary Awards. In total, there are eight awards to be won:

  • ATB Small Business of the Year
    • Presented to a small local business that has demonstrated significant business achievement.
  • BDC Emerging Growth Award
    • Presented to a new emerging small business that has shown rapid growth and profitability in its first 1-3 years of operation.
  • Company Culture Award
    • A company leading the way in employee engagement, satisfaction and retention. Proving to be an industry leader in company culture, this business is innovative in the way it attracts and retains employees.
  • Hometown Hero Award
  • Innovation Award
    • A company that is pushing conventional boundaries while disrupting and reshaping their industry through ground-breaking achievements in bringing innovation to the market.
  • Indigenous Business Achievement Award
  • KPMG People’s Choice Award
    • A small business that can generate the loyal support of their community, determined by public vote.
