Selling your home? Stage it like a pro.

Selling your home is a huge endeavour – appearance is everything. We know it can be stressful to try and figure out what makes your home look its best, so here are a few tips to make potential buyers feel at home:

  • Keep it tidy! A cluttered, messy home isn’t appealing to anyone. You want people to walk into your house and be able to picture themselves living in it. If it’s cluttered with all of your stuff, it’s harder to do that. Keeping clutter down also helps protect you. You never know who’s walking through your house and you don’t want any possessions to go missing. Put away your valuables and keep the space clean so it looks like the dream home that it is.
  • Invest in your sale! By spending a couple hundred dollars on trendy items, you can add a certain flair to your home that makes it more appealing to potential buyers. Anything from a new duvet cover to wall hangings can help give it that trendy, homey feel that people are looking for in their new home. Look at blogs and websites like Pinterest to see what is trending right now – so get decorating.
  • Make your home feel like their home. Take down family photos and other personal items. Give them a chance to mentally place their own photos and get a feel of what living there would be like. If possible, be out of the house when they are coming to view it. Seeing you in the space will remind them that they’re visiting and will make it harder for them to look at it as their home and not yours.
  • Make your home smell nice– this helps people fall in love with it. Now, you don’t need to bake fresh cookies before every show, but who doesn’t like cookies? There are other, less time-consuming options if baking isn’t your forte. Soft scents like lavender or fresh linen can do the job as well.
  • Don’t hide your clutter– this does not count as tidying! Don’t think you can remove the clutter from your living room and hide it in the closet. People will look in every nook and cranny of your home to see how much storage space there is, so cramming your garage or closets with all your junk isn’t going to work. Plus, if all your closets are packed, the potential buyers might think the house doesn’t have enough storage and could write it off immediately.
  • If you have pets, keep them out of the house. Everyone loves dogs and cats, but that’s not why the buyers are at your house. During showings, take your dog for a walk or take the cat to a friend’s place. Some animals get a little too curious and can get in the way or they get territorial and try to protect the home from strangers.

By keeping these tips in mind when showing your home, you might just have a bidding war on your hands!
