The foodie guide to Stampede 2019

Whether or not cowboys and the rodeo are your things, everyone can agree that the food that comes with the Calgary Stampede is a main highlight of the 10-day madness. Bringing everything from classics, like mini doughnuts and deep-fried ice cream, to the weird items, like pickle and scorpion pizza, there’s something here for everyone. Whether you’re looking for something sweet, salty or spicy (perhaps even a mix of all three), browse the crowded streets and you’ll find something. When you’re walking around the grounds looking for something to snack on, consider this list of tasty or unique options:

  • Avocado coconut ice cream is coming straight from the streets of Tokyo. Served in a coconut bowl, this dish will help keep you cool.
  • Street Dogs’ Beyond Meat burger will leave both vegetarians and meat-eaters wanting more. Vegan cheese options are available.
  • What’s better than a basket of French fries? A brick, of course. Keep an eye open for ‘cube fries’ to have a French fry experience like no other.
  • Go back to when you were a kid with the orange creamsicle milkshake. This sweet drink is tangy and refreshing, topped with a cookie crumble. It’s the perfect ode to the classic creamsicle. Lactose-free options are available.
  • Drink a Fruit, From a Fruit has pop rocks watermelon this year. They will infuse your watermelon with the popping candy to make it an ‘explosive’ experience.
  • Everyone loves bacon and onion rings, so Colossal Onion has brought them together. Combine smoky bacon with onion rings and throw it all in a deep fryer to give it that crispy, mouth-watering finish.
  • Take a trip on the Hogwarts Express with Summerland Soft Serve’s butterbeer ice cream. The shortbread and butterscotch ice cream come in your choice of a black charcoal cone or a cup with a wafer wand.
  • The Flamin’ Hot Cheetos corndog adds a spicy twist to a classic dish. They have taken a regular corndog, rolled it in jalapeno cheese sauce, and topped it with Flamin’ Hot Cheetos.
  • Everyone knows that the best part of fried chicken is the skin. Asian BBQ has taken it to the next level and has deep-fried chicken skin as a menu item – with your choice of dipping sauce, of course.
  • Mini doughnuts are a staple of Stampede alongside cotton candy. Mini O’s Mini Donuts has brought the two together with their cotton candy mini doughnuts. It’ll be tough to find a sweeter treat.
  • Stampede and hangovers are a tried and true combination, so Arepa Boss has come up with their own hangover cure. The deep-fried arepa is loaded with barbecue pork sausage, grilled salty white cheese, sunny side up eggs, salsa and more.

This list only scrapes the surface of what you’ll be able to find at the Stampede this year. So, grab your boots, cowboy hat and your appetite and head on down to the grounds from July 4th to July 14th to take advantage of everything that the Calgary Stampede has to offer.
