Why You Should Check Out Beakerhead This Year

Science isn’t generally known to be a sexy topic, nor is engineering; however, pair both of these with the art and entertainment world, and we introduce to you: Beakerhead. This five-day festival comes around Calgary each September, with new installations, programs, workshops and lessons on unique topics all across the city.

Who remembers the large tentacles coming out of the building in Inglewood? Or the old house downtown with balloons attached to it, mimicking the movie ‘Up?’ How about the large inflatable, light-up bunnies found in Central Memorial Park? These are all installations from past Beakerhead years, which may or may not make a reappearance this year.

Beakerhead Creative Society was started by two individuals in 2013 who had a vision for sharing their passion for science and engineering in a fun, exciting way. It is a registered charity with the mandate to globally advance education through the means of art and entertainment. With events focused on all ranges of age groups, it is possible for anyone to get excited about science here.

Running from Wednesday, September 18 until Sunday, September 22, there are countless events that you should check out to learn more. With a mixture of free and paid events, there is something here for everyone at Beakerhead:

  • September 18 – Lunch Without Light @ Dark Table for $62.50.
  • September 19 – Cocktails on Canvas @ Contemporary Calgary for $70.00.
  • September 20 – Locked Library @ Central Library for no cost.
  • September 21 – Spectacle @ Prince’s Island Park at varied costs.
  • September 22 – Museum of Making @ Cochrane for $10.

The main event for this festival is the Spectacle on Saturday mentioned above. This event runs from 5-11pm at Prince’s Island Park, featuring 25+ installations, delicious food trucks for you to sample, live entertainment and so much more. Here you will be able to immerse yourself in all things Beakerhead, learning and having fun at the same time. Kids age twelve and under get into this event for free!

If you’re interested in any of the Beakerhead events, it is advised that you pre-buy your tickets. Some events and programs have limited space and tickets typically sell out a week prior to the event, so choose which ones sound the most intriguing to you and purchase early. If you’re going with a group of people, this is even better; purchasing 10+ tickets to select events will make you eligible for discounts. Perhaps you and your partner want a unique date night out – pre-buying your tickets will ensure you have a spot at this year’s hottest science festival.

Even though this is only a five-day festival that takes places once a year, Beakerhead has year-round initiatives and educational programs to keep people interested in learning in the fields of science and engineering. Overall, “Beakerhead aims to engage, delight, surprise and entertain you so completely that you don’t even realize you are learning too!” So why not stop by and see what it’s all about?
