What to know about Small Business Week in Calgary

Everyone knows the big names like Enbridge, Scotiabank, Royal Bank of Canada, the big fish in the business world; but did you know that 99.7per centof all Canadian businesses are small- to medium-sized firms with less than 500 employees? Small businesses may seem unimportant at first glance, but they actually run our economy. It is small business that employs 70.5 per cent of the private labour force here in Canada – 8.2 million people, and this same sector employs 91.2 per cent of Albertans (one of the lower provinces across Canada). These same small- to medium-sized businesses contribute approximately 41 per cent of Canada’s GDP each year, so yes, they are incredibly important to us and our wellbeing.

Perhaps this is why Small Business Week is now celebrated across the country each year, to recognize and appreciate all those who are working towards their own goals and helping our economy simultaneously. From October 21-25, Canada’s largest celebration of small business “pays tribute to the contributions that small business makes to the Canadian economy.” This week allows those entrepreneurs who work tirelessly to be recognized for their endeavours and unite this independent workforce with a full week of programming to attend. Whether they need business coaching, accounting help, motivational speakers or simply an excuse to kick back and relax from their busy schedule, Small Business Week Calgary is here to save the day.

Tonight, an Evening with the Entrepreneurs will take place at Studio Bell National Music Centre from 5:30-8:30pm. McLeod Law will be hosting the event, with success stories from Scott Gravelle, the CEO/CTO and co-founder from Attabotics INC, and Ray DePaul, the Director of the Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Mount Royal University. Here, small business owners will hear about the trials of running a company and how to best push through them. Rob Fooks of McLeod Law will moderate the discussion, allowing you to enjoy an evening of dynamic conversation for only $20.

The Small Business Expo in Calgary will take place on October 24 from 10am-4pm at the BMO Centre, Hall A. Presented by Indeed, this dazzling exhibition will keep you entertained with keynote speakers, inspiring discussions, meetings with high-powered experts and so much more. Saeed Sadooghi from Indeed will be speaking on The Science of Talent Attraction: How to Win Over Talent while Cathie Saroka from Goldray Glass will be sharing her company’s growth story from a small start-up to a world-class operation.

Don’t forget to make time for the Small Business Awards Gala, as this will be the event of the week. On October 25 from 5-9pm, enjoy a night out on the red carpet at the Westin with all your newfound small business buds, where you’ll find local business leaders, finalists, a four-course meal and entertainment sprinkled throughout the evening. Tickets start at $99.
