How walkable is your neighbourhood?

We recently polled our Twitter followers on what community they think is the most walkable, and we were given some pretty good responses. The communities voted for on Twitter as being most walkable were: Garrison Woods, Marda Loop and Kensington.

With all three communities being pedestrian-friendly, and possessing several paths for cycling and walking, we tend to agree that these areas look good on the ‘walkable scale’. But actually, there’s a lot that can be taken into consideration when speaking about walkability. In fact, there are several communities ranked high for walkability, that perhaps you wouldn’t expect.

A walkable community is essentially a neighbourhood where you could live without needing a vehicle. These types of communities are pedestrian-friendly, and possess enough walkways and pathways to accommodate heavy foot traffic.

So curious in knowing how walkable your neighbourhood is? The Calgary Herald published a very interesting article on the subject, and offers great resources in finding out how your community ranks. You can find the article here.
