Progress on Multi-Family Recycling in Calgary

More and more multi-family dwellings and condo boards/owners are taking up recycling options, now that there’s a year to go until it’s mandatory.

City council made the decision to have apartments, condos and townhouses to have on-site recycling a while back, and it will take effect in February 2016. City council is already reporting a significant increase in multi-family recycling in our city.

The new rules are part of the City’s 80/20 objective to send 80 per cent less waste to landfills per person in 2020 than it did in 2007.

According to the 2014 Civic Census, of Calgary’s 478,223 dwellings, more than 20 per cent (102,028) are defined as apartment-style homes, with another 10 per cent as townhome-style homes. [CREB Now]

Parnell Legge, a waste diversion specialist with the city, says many owners have already complied. He says about 35% of buildings are already on-board, so the challenge over the next year will be to get the other 65%.

Owners of multi-family buildings have the flexibility to design programs they way in which they please and these services will be provided by private operators of their choosing as well. With more education and awareness, the City is hoping that they won’t have to fine buildings who don’t offer recycling options.

Does your multi-family building already have recycling options?
