Fall has finally hit, and eventually we’ll be dealing with colder weather. Paying attention to your landscaping in the fall will have great benefits come the winter months. Here’s some tips on what yard maintenance to take care of this month:

  • De-clutter: get the rake out and clear your yard of fallen leaves, tree debris, etc.
  • Compost: once you’ve finished harvesting and de-cluttering your yard, consider composting the rest. Bring your bagged leaves and pumpkins to a composting drop-off location, being provided by the City of Calgary from now until November 8th. A list of locations and more information can be found on the City website here.
  • Fix summer damage: now is the time to re-sod and re-seed where your landscape is looking bare and/or damage. If you seed in autumn, you’ll have fewer weeds next year.
  • Clean out water vessels: if you have a pond, waterfall, birdbath, etc. give that a good clean and consider draining it for the year.
  • Guard your plants and shrubs: place chicken wire or tree barriers around your shrubs and plants.
  • Cover your flowers: pluck the flowers that won’t make it through the year, or let nature run its course and decompose into composting for your yard. Otherwise, cover the garden if you have flowers or plants that will survive the cold temperatures until next Spring.
