Calgary Break-Ins: How to Increase Home Security

Unknown

On Monday night, there were a string of break-ins in southeast Calgary, which has prompted the Calgary Police to urge residents to increase their home’s security. Since June, there’s been over 150 home and garage break-ins in our city, which is nearly double that of the same time last year.

Here’s some tips for increased home security:

  • Install a peephole so you can easily view who’s at your door.
  • Stop your mail if you’re going out of town, a pile-up of mail and flyers is a clear indication for burglars that you’re not home.
  • Install a small safe where you can keep your valuables like passports, birth certificates, etc.
  • Put motion detector lighting up outside, this will help put light on anyone coming near your house which may deter a burglar.
  • Take care of your landscaping, overgrown bushes and plants just make for easy hiding places for burglars.
  • Don’t hide extra keys outside, as much as you think this might be easy for you when you forget yours, this is usually the first place robbers look for a way in.
  • Install a security system, this is a little more costly, but you can’t really put a price on peace-of-mind if it prevents someone from entering your home and taking your possessions.

If you’re looking to install a security system, our approved vendor is ADT Apex Security. In the meantime, Calgary Police are reminding residents to always lock up their vehicles and homes, and you can report any suspicious activity to police at 403-266-1234.
