With the May long weekend coming up, the RCMP have released a stern reminder about safe driving this weekend, after 17 motor vehicle deaths were recorded in Alberta this past month. The number is staggering, and officials say these accidents could have been prevented with safer driving and paying attention.
“A lot of times most of these accidents could be prevented so that’s the hard part from our perspective,” RCMP Sgt. Jack Poitras said. “A small bit of attention on the road could have prevented these accidents.” [Global Calgary]
Before you head out on the roads this weekend, here’s some safety reminders for driving:
- Check your vehicle to ensure you are caught up on maintenance, and all of your fluids are topped up. Leaving the city with a full tank of gas is always wise in case you’re driving through rural areas where gas stations are scarce.
- Ensure you have an emergency roadside kit in case you break down for any reason.
- Keep passengers safe by ensuring everyone is wearing a seatbelt (besides, you can be ticketed without them).
- Drive defensively: obey speed limits, traffic signs, etc.
- Be alert at all times while driving, and refrain from distracting things like phone calls, GPS and radio controls. Also never drive when you are tired or under the influence.
- Share the road with other vehicles, motorcycles, cyclists and pedestrians. Be alert when passing or driving beside other vehicles or motorists of any kind.
RCMP is teaming up with city police to patrol roads this long weekend when traffic is always expected to increase. While impaired driving is always a top concern, they will also be on the lookout for distracted driving (phone, GPS, etc. while driving). Enjoy the Victoria Day long weekend and stay safe on the roads!
