It’s no secret that Calgary hasn’t always been viewed as the most pedestrian-friendly city in the world. Calgary is a city that expands outwards, whereas other cities with limited space build up, such as Vancouver or London. However, we have started to realize the need to drive less often, use less gas and build things more closely together. These areas are designed for people who perhaps don’t, or choose not to, have a car and get around mostly on foot or by bike. Here are our top three Calgary picks for pedestrian-friendly communities:
There is always something happening in the heart of downtown Calgary, running from 14th street to the Elbow River. If the Beltline is your home, you work, eat, sleep and party downtown – there is no real need to ever leave this area. With a grocery store on 11th avenue, the train running on 7th avenue and both Calgary rivers only blocks away from your door, you are living the dream! Restaurants, pubs, clubs, parks – you name it, it’s here. Generally, you should expect smaller apartments and condos for living spaces, with the occasional house here or there. The Scotiabank Saddledome is also located in the Beltline so say hello to Flames games, concerts and the Calgary Stampede.
This quiet residential area is tucked away just north of a lively downtown and a rushing river, but the residents love its community feel and low traffic. With streets full of character homes, apartment buildings and community living options, Sunnyside depict a leisurely life close to all the important amenities. Tenth street runs north and south with a grocery store, gas station, multiple coffee shops and train station barely off the beaten path. But the fun doesn’t stop there; Kensington road runs perpendicular to 10th street, even more full of amenities. It hosts countless restaurants and bars, tea shops, clothing boutiques and even a board game café. Sunnyside – everything you need in one convenient location.
This even quieter residential area is only a 10-minute train ride or one-hour walk to the downtown centre; however, you already have everything you need within reasonable walking distance. The neighbourhood is surrounded by both Brentwood Shopping Centre and North Hill Mall, where you will find a grocery store, liquor store, restaurants and countless stores in both. Don’t forget that the University of Calgary and McMahon Stadium are seconds away from your doorstep!
Here we have listed one downtown neighbourhood, one skirting downtown and one residential area that are all great pedestrian-focused communities with great access to local amenities. Not sure about them yet? Walk, bike, train or drive to take a look and explore the area on foot.
