Avenue Magazine’s annual survey is out: Calgary’s Best Neighbourhoods of 2018 has officially been released to the public. Every year, the magazine sends out a survey asking the residents of Calgary to rate its 185 neighbourhoods based on factors relating to walkability, transportation, crime, restaurants and pubs, etc. Residents anxiously await the results to see how their community falls in relation to their neighbours.
Coming in at second place, here are some statistics about the community of Arbour Lake:
- Population in 2017: 10,713
- Walk score: 46
- Transit score: 43
- Recreation facility: 87
Arbour Lake is a northwest community located just on the inside of Stoney Trail and on the edge of the Crowfoot shopping centre, with quick access to all major amenities as well as highways leading out of the city. Arbour Lake was established in 1992 so the homes in this area are relatively new and quite spacious, with a population of less than half of the Beltline, this year’s survey winner, even though it covers 1.5 times the area. Fewer people and more space mean less noise from cars, construction and people while more room for parks, pathways and wide-open spaces.
This community is known for both its ‘green’ spaces as well as its ‘blue’ spaces; it is said to have resort-like living, with access to parks, bike paths, a country club and a gorgeous lake brimming with rainbow trout and a beach for children to play on all summer long. For some reason, people seem to love being close to bodies of water, and Arbour Lake among the other Calgary lake-communities can attest to that.
Some of the notable perks of Arbour Lake living:
- Ranked 7/185 in community engagement
- Home to Crowfoot C-Train station, allowing an easy downtown commute
- Strong focus on physical activity, with indoor and outdoor options promoted
Even though Arbour Lake did not score within the top 10 recreational facilities, the community reports that this is a huge selling point in the area. Arbour Lake proudly offers walking and biking trails with spectacular mountain views, fitness centres and facilities offering swimming, boating, fishing and ice skating. This paired with high community engagement encourages people to get out of the house and take care of themselves, as well as have fun with an activity of their choosing.
