How to create a library at home

Happy ‘Book Lovers Day’! It always seems to be National ‘Something’ Day, so today we celebrate the gift of reading. In a world of technology, us bookworms are harder to come by these days. Every August 9th, this unofficial holiday encourages people to pick up a book and spend some time reading (perhaps instead of watching TV, looking at your phone or playing on the iPad – you get the idea). Maybe you go to the bookstore to pick out a new release or instead you hit the library to take out an old classic. Perhaps you enjoy reading your book so much that you decide to do it more and more often. Books are a great tool to learn, relax and entertain yourself wherever you are. Here are some tips for creating a great library right at home where you can escape everyday life into the new world of imagination.

Storage Space

The biggest thing when it comes to having a library is space. Whether you have a full room or a single shelf, you need somewhere to keep your books. Most people use shelving units, but there are also bookends, crates and glass cases commonly used to display books. There are plenty of cute shelves out there – affordable ones can be found at Ikea, Walmart, or even used ones on Kijiji. Many houses come with built-in shelves in the living room or study so all you have to do is fill the space with your favourite reads. Seating Options

Once you have the space picked out, the next step is seating. You want to be comfortable while you read so now comes the tough part. Do you like to read sitting up or laying down? Do you like to be at a desk or lounging on a couch? You may want to have several options in the room (size permitting) since you’ll probably switch it up day-to-day, depending on your mood or the type of reading. Ambience

The biggest debate: natural light or artificial light? It all depends on the type of space you’ve picked out for your home library. Perhaps you have a great daybed that is right by a large window. If this is the case, you probably only need a small floor lamp to use in case you decide to read into the night. However, if you’ve chosen to make the den your home library, then you may want to look into getting some large lamps and overhead lighting. You need to decide if you want your space to be natural and bright or soft and cozy.

Once you’ve decided where the library goes and what type of reader you are, the seating and ambience fall into place. For any and all home library ideas, Pinterest will inspire you to start designing your own right about….now!
