Calgarians are flocking to the suburbs: Census 2015

Results of the 2015 City of Calgary census were released last week, and the numbers show that Calgary’s suburbs are growing at a faster pace than the rest of the city. Overall, our city is home to over 35,000 new residents, and Evanston in the city’s northwest is leading growth in our communities.

OVERALL POPULATION

  • Calgary’s population is 1,230,915, up 35,721 residents from last year
  • Our growth percentage in 2015, is similar to that seen in the 2007 boom
  • Net migration saw an additional 24,909 residents moving to Calgary this year

COMMUNITY GROWTH

  • 9 communities saw growth of over 1,000 residents this past year
  • Evanston (NW) led the way with 2,853 new residents
  • Mahogany (SE), Auburn Bay (SE), Cranston (SE), Copperfield (SE), Saddle Ridge (NE), Nolan Hill (NW), Redstone (NE) and Skyview Ranch (NE) rounded out the list.

HOUSING

  • There are 492,623 dwelling units in the city, up 2.92% from last year
  • Vacant dwellings are up from last year, sitting at 12,526 (dwelling suitable for occupancy and not including construction units or renovation units).
  • Overall vacancy rate is 2.64%, up from 2.01% last year
