Tips for Safe Driving this Long Weekend

With the May long weekend here, the RCMP has a strong warning for drivers before heading out on the roads—stay safe! During last year’s May long weekend, there were five fatal collisions, 42 injury collisions and 3,105 speeding tickets doled out.

“Typically, during the Victoria Day weekend, we see an increase in traffic volume on the highways, as well as a greater mix of cars, RVs and motorcycles,” said Steve Daley with Alberta RCMP Traffic Services. “This long weekend we are asking everyone to be prepared for heavier traffic. You can ensure everyone gets to their destinations safely and enjoy the long weekend by buckling up, taking your time, putting the phone down and staying alert to others on the road.” [Global Calgary]

Before you head out on the roads this weekend, here’s some safety reminders for driving:

  • Check your vehicle to ensure you are caught up on maintenance, and all of your fluids are topped up. Leaving the city with a full tank of gas is always wise in case you’re driving through rural areas where gas stations are scarce.
  • Ensure you have an emergency roadside kit in case you break down for any reason.
  • Keep passengers safe by ensuring everyone is wearing a seatbelt (besides, you can be ticketed without them).
  • Drive defensively: obey speed limits, traffic signs, etc.
  • Be alert at all times while driving, and refrain from distracting things like phone calls, GPS and radio controls. Also never drive when you are tired or under the influence.
  • Share the road with other vehicles, motorcycles, cyclists and pedestrians. Be alert when passing or driving beside other vehicles or motorists of any kind.

RCMP is teaming up with city police to patrol roads this long weekend when traffic is always expected to increase. While impaired driving is always a top concern, they will also be on the lookout for distracted driving (phone, GPS, etc. while driving).
